Layout and Design

Course No. 1400-A

Once some experience in hand lettering has been achieved, the next step is learning to create an inviting and interesting layout for your piece. In this course, we will study basic layout and design principles and how they can be applied to projects of interest to the calligrapher, such as quotations, invitations, awards and logos. Beginning with printed text, we will work through thumbnail sketches, refining lettering size and line spacing, utilizing contrasting letter styles and sizes, and ultimately creating a finished piece. The use of gouache for color, as well as metallic paints for decoration will be included in the course.

Registration Form
In addition to our normal calligraphy classes, we are pleased to offer bookbinding, pop-up book making, and quill cutting for a total of 16 courses this summer.

Many of our classes are scheduled in a format where the first two to four hours of class time are used for instruction and demonstration. After a brief break, the class resumes on an optional "open studio" basis. This allows participants access to the studio classroom and its equipment to work on a project. Although the instructors will assign a project if requested, usually students are encouraged to provide their own project - something that is of particular interest to them.

We are very excited to have added three distinguished teachers to our roster this year: Illustrator and Paper Artist, Deborah Dyer; Calligrapher, Peggy Choteborsky; and Bookbinder, Peter Foster.

To read about the instructors, please click the instructor's name.

Withdrawal/Cancellation Policy: A refund (tuition less 20%) will be issued if a student withdraws from class two weeks or more prior to the beginning of class. If withdrawal occurs less than two weeks before class, no cash refund will be issued, but a school credit voucher will be provided. Occasionally there is insufficient registration for a class to run. In such cases, registrants will be given three options:  (1) Private or semi-private lessons (with price adjustment), (2) placement in another time slot for the same class, or (3) refund.

Please note, the North Bennet Street School in Boston will be offering a Copperplate Script course taught by Maryanne Grebenstein on Saturday & Sunday, July 19 & 20. For info or to register click nbss.
